BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) - Republican Gov. Paul LePage has nominated Brian Whitney of Augusta to lead the Maine Technology Institute.

Whitney has been serving as acting director of the publicly-funded nonprofit organization in Brunswick since August.

He took over for Robert Martin, who was ousted from his post by LePage six months ago. Whitney has also been serving as the director of business development and innovation for the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development since 2012.

The governor said in a statement Friday that he is looking forward to working with Whitney to help create long-term jobs.

The Maine Technology Institute was created in 1999 and focuses on promoting focuses promoting technological research and development.
