LOS ANGELES (AP) - Police say an off-duty law enforcement officer opened fire as he chased a man who broke into his home in Los Angeles.

LAPD Sgt. John Marquez says the suspect got away and it wasn’t known if he was struck.

City News Service says the officer was sitting in his living room in the Palms area late Thursday when he noticed a man standing in his kitchen. The officer grabbed a handgun and chased the man through the backyard, firing several times.

Authorities set up a perimeter but a search turned up nothing.

Officials say the officer works for the Whittier Police Department.
