ALVA, Okla. (AP) - A northwest Oklahoma couple is facing felony child neglect charges after authorities say a severely disabled 17-year-old boy in their care was discovered dead inside their home near Alva.

Woods County court records show charges were filed late Thursday against 51-year-old Twana Smart and her husband, 55-year-old Timothy Smart. If convicted, the pair could face up to life in prison. Court records do not indicate whether either have an attorney.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says the teen was discovered dead in April, and that deputies investigating his death requested OSBI assistance after a medical examiner’s report that documented nearly two dozen injuries on his body.

The OSBI says a child-protection team at an Oklahoma City hospital suggested medical neglect led to the teen’s death.
