EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey neurologist has been charged with sexual assault in connection with a months-long investigation involving his patients.

Authorities say Dr. Syed Jaffery turned himself in Thursday and faces charges of sexual assault, sexual contact, harassment and lewdness.

It’s not clear if he had an attorney and Jaffery is free on bail.

The charges come nearly two months after Jaffery was charged with criminal sexual contact after authorities say at the time that they identified more than three patients who say they were victimized during medical examination.

Police say that more than 40 potential victims contacted the department about Jaffery. More than 20 of those had chargeable offenses and six occurred beyond the statute of limitations.

The state says he’s taken a leave of absence from practicing medicine that will last until at least March 11.
