DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - State authorities say investigators should soon wrap up their report on a fatal shooting by a police officer outside an Alabama animal shelter.

The Dothan Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1BuvaUZ ) the State Bureau of Investigation will issue its findings to Houston County prosecutors. A spokesman for the SBI, Alabama State Trooper Kevin Cook, says the report should be turned in within the next 30 days.

SBI agents are investigating the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Robert Earl Lawrence by a Dothan police officer in late December. Authorities say Lawrence was trying to drop off a stray animal at the Dothan Animal Shelter and got upset after being told he needed to first show an ID.

Police say Lawrence was shot in the abdomen during an altercation with an officer trying to arrest him.
