PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Portsmouth fire officials say ice in Narragansett Bay hampered their search for a man who jumped off the Mount Hope Bridge.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1LmtU8g ) that first responders began looking for the man shortly after 1 p.m. Friday. Deputy Fire Chief Michael P. O’Brien says several motorists saw him jump.

Several fire department marine units couldn’t respond because of ice in the bay, but one got through.

O’Brien says crews searched for two hours before stopping as conditions worsened. He says the Coast Guard continues to search.

Rhode Island State Police and local officers also responded.
