CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Record cold temperatures are causing thousands of power outages across West Virginia

Appalachian Power says 2,500 customers were without electricity Friday afternoon in southern West Virginia, down from nearly 12,000 Friday morning.

About 1,200 of the afternoon outages were in Kanawha County.

FirstEnergy says 770 customers were without service, down from more than 1,700 earlier.

Readings dipped below zero throughout the state early Friday.
