MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Volunteers have helped remove five starving, dehydrated horses from a boarding stable in southeastern Michigan where they’re suspected of being neglected.

Starry Skies Equine Rescue and Sanctuary and the Michigan Horse Welfare Coalition say they assisted the Monroe County sheriff’s department on Thursday.

The rescue groups say the owner of a Monroe County stable had expressed concerns about the health of some horses that were left at her facility. The officers and a local veterinarian found five horses at the site in an emaciated condition as well as a dead pony.

The horses belonged to an owner or owners who reportedly had stopped caring for the animals. Animal cruelty charges are expected.
