WILTON, N.Y. (AP) - A nonprofit land preservation organization in upstate New York is asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo to add property at a former state prison to a neighboring state park.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports (https://bit.ly/18JW7bd ) that Saratoga PLAN - Preserving Land and Nature - has sent the governor a petition with more than 1,000 signatures calling for transferring about 750 acres of forested land around the former Mount McGregor prison to Moreau (maw-ROH’) Lake State Park.

The group wants the acreage switched from the Department of Corrections to the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The proposal has the backing of local state lawmakers and other elected officials.

The medium-security facility located just north of Saratoga Springs closed last summer as part of a state prison consolidation plan.
