MCKINNEY, Texas (AP) - A jury has found a North Texas woman guilty of capital murder in the suffocation death of a two-year-old girl.

Melinda Muniz of Plano was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole in the 2013 death of Grace Ford.

Police say Muniz and the child’s father were engaged at the time when Grace was found unconscious in her crib with duct tape over her mouth. They say a store’s surveillance video shows Muniz purchasing duct tape hours before Grace’s death.

Prosecutors say 26-year-old Muniz suffocated the child and then staged the apartment she shared with the child’s father, who was at work at the time, to look like a home invasion.

WFAA-TV reports police say Muniz and the father were in the process of breaking up.
