MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Assistant Chief John Meza has been selected as the interim police chief in Mesa.

He replaces outgoing police chief Frank Milstead, who recently was selected by Gov. Doug Ducey as the new director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Meza will begin his new assignment this week and serve until a new police chief is hired through a national search at a yet-to-be-determined date.

He has served as an assistant police chief for seven years and been with the Mesa Police Department since 1986.
