BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A one-time death row inmate has died of cancer in an Alabama prison.

Al.com (https://bit.ly/1Al9BpB ) reports that 65-year-old James Henry Borden Jr. died Sunday at Donaldson prison near Birmingham.

Borden was sentenced to die for the 1993 murder of 63-year-old Nellie Ledbetter. The woman was killed while her grandchildren watched at her home near Moulton.

Borden’s death sentence was later commuted to life without parole because of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that bars states from executing the mentally retarded. Experts determined Borden had an IQ of 53.

Borden originally received the death sentence because he had been convicted of another murder within 20 years of the Ledbetter killing.
