PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Peoria police say a 12-year-old boy has died after being shot in the head.

The (Peoria) Journal Star (https://bit.ly/1x9tRDd ) reports the boy was shot Monday, and authorities confirmed his death Tuesday afternoon. Police haven’t released his identity.

According to police, multiple shots were fired in the area where the boy was hit, and several vehicles were seen leaving the scene. The boy was found lying on the ground outside in a residential neighborhood shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.

Police say they didn’t know the boy’s identity until a parent reported him missing and later identified him at a hospital Monday night.

Police ask people who might know what happened to contact the Peoria Police Department, or to go to a mobile command post set up near the scene of the shooting.
