PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Petersburg plans to close its jail and move more than 200 inmates to a regional facility.

Mayor W. Howard Myers held a news conference Monday to announce the process for closing the jail. Media outlets report that Myers left the news conference after Sheriff Vanessa Crawford questioned the decision to close the jail.

Myers said Petersburg’s inmates will be moved to the Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County beginning in mid-March.

Sixty-one deputies will lose their jobs as a result of the jail’s closure.

Media outlets say Crawford wasn’t invited to participate in the news conference. She sat in the audience and questioned the mayor and other city officials about her deputies’ futures and how much the city would save by closing the facility.
