LAS VEGAS (AP) - Students from one Las Vegas magnet school defeated rivals from 31 other schools to win $5,000 for their school math and science department and a trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Science Bowl in April.

Energy Department spokesman Daniel Burns says the five-member team from Northwest Career and Technical Academy topped Reno High School in the championship match Saturday at Vegas PBS studios.

High schools from the Las Vegas area and as far away as Lake Tahoe, Lovelock, Fallon, Big Pine, California, and Cedar City, Utah, took part in the 24th annual Nevada Science Bowl competition.

The event is hosted by the National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office in North Las Vegas.

The show was taped for broadcast in coming weeks.
