BALTIMORE (AP) - Four construction workers who pulled two children and their father from a burning Baltimore home have been recognized for their heroism.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and city fire Chief Niles Ford hailed the workers as heroes on Wednesday at City Hall. The City Council honored the men at a meeting on Monday night.

Fire officials say the men ran into a burning building to save the two children and their father. The children are 3 and 4 years old. The fire killed their 2-year-old brother, Nasir Smith.

Witnesses of the Jan. 13 fire say the children’s father emerged from the home badly burned and begging for help.

Investigators found that the fire was caused by a heater that was too close to combustibles.
