KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - The Coast Guard Cutter Thunder Bay is breaking ice along the Hudson River to keep shipping channels open between Kingston and Albany for barges carrying heating oil and road salt.

The Coast Guard says the effort is in support of “Operation Reliable Energy for Northeast Winters.” The operation aims to ensure communities have the security, supplies and emergency resources they need throughout the winter.

The Thunder Bay is a 140-foot icebreaking tug home-ported in Rockland, Maine.

The Coast Guard says 75 percent of the heating oil used in the country is transported through New England, New York, and New Jersey, and 90 percent of that is delivered by barges.
