RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A national council ranks Virginia fourth among the states when it comes to “green” buildings.

The U.S. Green Building Council ranks states in terms of sustainable building design, construction and operation per capita. The council released its annual rankings of the top 10 states on Wednesday. Illinois was ranked No. 1.

In 2014, Virginia certified 150 green projects representing more than 18 million square feet of real estate. That’s 2.33 square feet per resident.

Notable projects cited by the council include the University of Mary Washington’s Technology Convergence Center in Fredericksburg, Tycon Courthouse in Vienna, and Norfolk State University’s Lyman Beecher Brooks Library.
