PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Two former Philadelphia police officers have been sentenced to prison terms in what prosecutors called a scheme to steal from drug dealers.

Twenty-four-year-old Jonathan Garcia was sentenced Wednesday to more than 17 years on drug distribution, robbery, attempted robbery and firearms convictions.

Federal prosecutors said he stole nearly $4,000 from drug suspects, falsifying documents to cover his crimes, and also repeatedly sold heroin.

He told U.S. District Judge Legrome Davis that “greed got the best of me.” But the judge told him “You never should never have been a cop.”

Defense attorney Scott DeClaudio said his client was probably not the first officer not to turn in “every dime” after encountering money.

Garcia’s 28-year-old co-defendant, Sydemy Joanis, was sentenced to more than five years on robbery and firearms counts.
