PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) - A Georgia fugitive is accused of choking his girlfriend, then punching a police dog before he was arrested in the Tampa Bay area.

Authorities say 25-year-old John Hagin fled before police arrived for a domestic disturbance call at a Pinellas Park motel on Monday. But officers quickly spotted him nearby.

The Tampa Bay Times (https://bit.ly/1KcWLLP ) reports the man ran into a nearby city park. Officers sent a police dog after him.

According to a police report, Hagin punched the dog in the head and body after it bit him. The dog wasn’t injured, but Hagin was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Hagin was wanted in Georgia on drug charges and now faces multiple charges including domestic battery by strangulation and offenses against a police dog.

He remains in jail.
