EASTPOINTE, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit-area woman charged with murder after her newborn baby’s body was discovered at a recycling center has been scheduled for a key court hearing.

A brief hearing took place Wednesday in Eastpointe’s District Court for Angela Alexie, who is jailed on $1 million bond. A Feb. 20 preliminary examination was scheduled to determine if the case goes to trial.

The 24-year-old is charged with child abuse and murder committed during a felony.

Defense lawyer attorney Steve Kaplan has said she’s “very remorseful” about the boy’s death.

Police say Alexie gave birth in a garage in Eastpointe on Dec. 22 and left the baby. It died two days later, likely from exposure to cold weather. The body was found at a recycling center in nearby Roseville on Jan. 14.
