CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State Police say that heavy snow in east central Illinois has led to an eight-vehicle crash that has shut down part of Interstate 74 east of Champaign.

A news release from the State Police says the crash on westbound I-74 near St. Joseph involves four semitrailers and four other vehicles.

That’s just one of a number of crashes on I-74 and I-57 in the area. Some involve injuries but details were not immediately available.

The State Police said the snow was creating near-whiteout conditions. Falling temperatures were also contributing to slick roads.

The National Weather Service expected mostly moderate snowfall across central Illinois on Wednesday. Up to 3 inches was expected in the Champaign area.
