STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Starkville Fire Chief Rodger Mann has announced he will retire Feb. 22.

The Commercial Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1u9FTlc ) Mann made the announced Tuesday at the city board of aldermen meeting.

Mann joined the fire department as a volunteer in 1980 and was promoted to a full-time firefighter two years later. He became a fire inspector in 1993 and was assigned as fire marshal supervisor in 2003.

He was named interim chief in 2007 and the title was made permanent in 2008.

When he joined in the 1980s, Mann says Starkville had a Class 7 fire rating and a 24-person department. The department has grown to more than 60 employees, and the city’s Class 4 fire rating is nearing a Class 3 designation.
