MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A black couple says they suspect an arsonist targeted their Manhattan Beach home because of their race.

The Torrance Daily Breeze (https://bit.ly/1vwKu1U ) says a fire burned the entrance of the Clinton home around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, forcing the family out and causing about $200,000 in damage.

Authorities say they’re investigating and considering several possibilities.

Ronald Clinton says he suspects somebody poured gasoline over a tire and threw it at his front door. His wife was away on business but he fled with their three children and their dog.

The Clintons have lived in the mostly white Los Angeles suburb for 11 years. Clinton says they’re the only black family on their street.

He and his wife, Malissia, say they suspect the fire was a hate crime.

On Friday night dozens of community members and the mayor of Manhattan Beach gathered for a vigil in support of the Clintons.
