WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - A judge has sentenced the mayor of Mount Vernon, New York, to one year of probation following his guilty plea last year on federal tax charges.

The Journal News (https://lohud.us/1C2lZpZ ) reports that U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Davison sentenced 76-year-old Ernest Davis during a Friday hearing.

Davis pleaded guilty in October to two counts of willfully failing to file federal income tax returns. He told the judge Friday he was disappointed in himself for his “self-inflicted wounds.”

The newspaper reports that prosecutors wanted Davis to get a harsher sentence to send a message, and they questioned whether he has fully taken responsibility for the crimes.
