SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - State lawmakers want to form a task force to try to figure out why fewer Utah voters than ever are participating in elections.

The House Government Operations Committee voted 7-1 on Friday afternoon to approve a plan creating a voter participation task force.

The bill from Salt Lake City Democratic Rep. Patrice Arent now advances to the full House for consideration.

If passed by the House, Senate and governor, the task force would produce a report by mid-November detailing ways the state could encourage more voters to turn out at the polls in 2016 and beyond.

This past November, six out of 10 registered Utah voters did not cast ballots, setting a new historic low.
