AURORA, Colo. (AP) - A large crowd of family and friends of a 17-year-old girl who was shot to death by Denver police gathered to pay their respects before the teen’s burial.

The Denver Post reports (https://dpo.st/1KqfzHx ) many at Jessica Hernandez’s wake Friday were overcome with emotion as they tried to make sense of her death.

Police say Hernandez was shot Jan. 26 after she drove a stolen car toward an officer in a Denver alley. However, a teen passenger in the car says Hernandez lost control of the vehicle because she’d already been shot and was unconscious.

One of Hernandez’s friends, 16-year-old Quarron Floyd, told the Post before the wake “I’ve been crying the whole ride over here - I just don’t think I’m quite ready to look at her.”

Hernandez will be buried Saturday.
