FAIRFIELD, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say passengers have been removed from a public transit bus that veered from the road and overturned in a ravine.

Fairfield Fire Chief Kevin Sutton tells WBRC-TV nearly 20 people were aboard the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority bus when it crashed late Monday morning. Sutton says passengers who needed medical attention have been taken to a local hospital.

Passengers have told local media that the driver appeared to suffer a medical problem shortly before the crash.

Police Chief Leon Davis says the cause of the crash is under investigation.
