“Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd suggested during Sunday’s show President Obama is a troll of the National Prayer Breakfast who dislikes the event itself but enjoys using it as a platform for controversial debates.

“I have my own theory,” the NBC host said during a discussion with historian Jon Meacham. “He’s not a big fan of the Prayer Breakfast … and I think he almost enjoys creating a rhetorical debate.”

Among Mr. Obama’s comments at last week’s breakfast were his view that Christians ought to get off their “high horse” of moral righteousness against Islam because history includes examples of atrocities committed in Jesus’ name, such as the Crusades and the Inquisition.

Mr. Meacham, author of “American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers and the Making of a Nation,” said Mr. Obama failed to mention that the Crusades were “an exception to a rule.”

“So if you’re going to start this debate, it’s better not to do it with one or two sentences,” Mr. Meacham said.
