ELMORE, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Corrections is probing the death of an inmate at the Elmore Correctional Facility.

Authorities say 33-year-old William Shepherd was stabbed by another inmate Sunday afternoon and was later pronounced dead. Corrections officials say Shepherd was sentenced to prison on drug trafficking charges in Jefferson County in April 2010.

Department of Corrections officials say a 40-year-old inmate serving a 35-year sentence for robbery charges from Mobile County is considered a suspect in Shepherd’s death.
