JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey school closed early after a small fire broke out in a bathroom, creating very smoky conditions in the building.
The Jersey Journal (https://bit.ly/175mZSy) reports the fire at the Frank R. Conwell Middle School 4 in Jersey City was reported just before 2 p.m. Monday and was extinguished about 20 minutes later.
No injuries were reported, but officials say the fire filled the school with an acrid smoke that was caused by burning plastic. The building’s heating and air conditioning systems were shut down so the smoke could not spread.
Students and staff were sent home early as a precaution, but classes were expected to resume Tuesday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
