NEW YORK (AP) - A defense attorney says a Bronx substitute teaching assistant charged with repeatedly raping a 14-year-old special education student has never been alone with the boy.

Police say 29-year-old Maria Contreras was arrested Saturday on charges of raping a victim under age 15 and criminal sex act.

According to The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1DX11uN), Contreras’s attorney, Ruth Hamilton, says her client never touched the boy. She described the student as a “special-needs child with serious behavioral issues.”

Contreras worked at the Bronx Academy of Letters, a public middle and high school.

Spokeswoman Devora Kaye says Contreras no longer works for the Department of Education. She says school officials are working with police on the investigation.
