NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - State police shot and wounded a man who authorities say tried to hit a trooper with a stolen minivan.

The shooting in Newark occurred around 10:30 a.m. Monday, shortly after troopers on a routine patrol had stopped the minivan being driven by 31-year-old city resident Steve Montgomery. Authorities say the vehicle had been carjacked on Sunday.

Montgomery pulled the van over, but authorities say he soon veered onto the sidewalk as the troopers approached the vehicle on foot. He then allegedly drove at a trooper, who opened fire.

Montgomery was shot multiple times but continued driving into Irvington, where he crashed into another car. He was then taken into custody, and charges are pending against him.

Montgomery was being treated at a hospital, where he was under police guard.
