SOUTH OGDEN, Utah (AP) - The man convicted of first-degree homicide in the 1990 shooting death of a Sandy contractor has died at the age of 85.

Utah Department of Corrections officials said Sunday that Eugene Woodland, also known as Captain Nemo, died Thursday at a South Ogden care center.

Woodland was convicted in the death of 40-year-old Bruce Larson, a father of five and devout Mormon.

Woodland began serving his sentence at the Utah State Prison in 1994 and his sentence was set to expire in 2095.

But the Utah Board of Parsons and Parole approved his early release to the care center in 2012, saying he was incapacitated.

Prison officials say his cause of death was “age related.”
