SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) - An 8-year-old boy has died after falling through the ice on a pond in Rowan County.

Authorities told local media outlets the boy had been at a park in Salisbury with two friends Sunday afternoon when he fell through the ice. Officials say he was under water about 20 minutes.

Salisbury firefighters found the boy and he was taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center where he was pronounced dead about 4 p.m.

The boy’s name has not been released.

The two friends said the victim was walking on the pond and fell backward and broke through the ice. They said they tried to reach him with sticks but were unsuccessful.
