SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - The Spartanburg County coroner says a woman found dead in a June house fire was strangled,

A statement from Coroner Rusty Clevenger reported by local media outlets on Monday said 63-year-old Willie Mae Gray died from not being able to breathe due to manual strangulation.

Gray’s body was discovered in her home in Spartanburg on June 17. Spartanburg police Capt. Regina Nowak said Gray’s body was found by firefighters in another room and away from where the fire broke out. At the time, Nowak said detectives found injuries to her neck that did not appear self-inflicted.

The woman’s death was ruled a homicide on Dec. 23, 2014, after months of microscopic testing and what Clevenger called “a lot of digging.”
