MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A former nursing home employee accused of punching a 93-year-old woman is set to be arraigned April 3.

Attorney General Luther Strange said in a statement Monday that 47-year-old Anita Watford, a nursing assistant, is accused of punching an elderly woman in the head Oct. 31 at Glen Haven Health and Rehabilitation when she repeatedly spat her medicine out.

Strange says Watford told administrators she was trying to hold the woman’s hands down when she accidentally hit the patient, but her statement was contradicted by witness accounts.

Watford is charged with abuse or neglect of a protected person. Strange says Watford was arrested and released on $10,000 bond.

Court records don’t indicate that Watford has an attorney, and a message left at a number listed for her wasn’t immediately returned.
