OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi has promoted Corey Batoon to its on-field football coaching staff.

Batoon has been at Ole Miss since 2012 in various administrative roles for the football program. He will coach the safeties and also be the special teams coordinator. Defensive coordinator Dave Wommack, who coached the safeties this year, will handle the linebackers.

Batoon replaces Tom Allen, who left last month to become the defensive coordinator at South Florida.

Batoon also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Arkansas State and 11 seasons as the associate head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Northern Arizona.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said in a statement that Batoon “is a brilliant football mind, and I am confident he will thrive in this role.”
