NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A Newark man convicted last year on murder charges in the stomping death of a former friend has been sentenced to 50 years in state prison.

Essex County prosecutors say 43-year-old Dwayne Johnson also received a four-year sentence Monday for a theft charge. That term will run consecutively to the sentence he got for the January 2013 slaying of 38-year-old Newark resident Terrence Everett.

Authorities have said the two men were friends, but got into an argument after Johnson’s girlfriend asked Everett for cigarettes. The dispute carried on and Everett punched Johnson’s girlfriend in December 2012.

Authorities say Johnson attacked Everett the following month by stomping and kicking him in the head. A passer-by videotaped the attack, and Johnson rifled through the victim’s pockets after the beating.
