PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence Journal reports the director of the state’s Department of Children, Youth and Families has resigned, days after writing an opinion column in the newspaper urging continued support for her agency.

The Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1A9FBrh) that new Health & Human Services chief Elizabeth Roberts said in an email Monday to staff she has accepted the resignation of Janice DeFrances.

The email says deputy director Kevin Aucoin will be acting director during the search for a successor, to be appointed by new Gov. Gina Raimondo.

Raimondo, the former state treasurer, has said she had concerns about DCYF cost overruns, and a report commissioned by the administration of former Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

DeFrances wrote in her column she was “incredibly proud” of DCYF’s accomplishments as it worked to meet increasing needs that stressed state resources.
