SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A family spokesman says former Utah House speaker Becky Lockhart was diagnosed last week with a very aggressive but unspecified disease.

Provo state Sen. Curt Bramble spoke briefly about Lockhart’s condition Monday morning while addressing a conference of the Utah Taxpayers Association.

Bramble says Lockhart is critically ill and the family will offer more information about her condition when they feel it’s an appropriate time.

He says the family has asked for privacy and prayers.

Bramble notified lawmakers of Lockhart’s illness last week as she was hospitalized.

Lockhart, a 46-year-old Republican from Provo, decided not to seek another term in the Legislature this year.

She had served in the House since 1999 and became its first female speaker in 2010.

Her term ended Jan. 1
