PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A businessman has pledged $5 million to construct a new home for the Providence College School of Business.

The college said Tuesday that Arthur F. Ryan is donating the money to create the 64,000-square foot Arthur and Patricia Ryan Center for Business Studies to house the business school program.

Ryan was the chairman and chief executive officer of Prudential Financial, Inc., for 14 years. He retired in 2008. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Providence College.

College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley says Ryan is one of the most successful businessmen to graduate from the college and he hopes the new building will encourage students to aspire high.

Ryan says the gift represents an investment in the college that has meant so much to him.
