MIAMI (AP) - A former lawyer has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for fatally shooting a handyman during an eviction at a Miami Beach condominium.

A judge imposed the sentence Tuesday on 48-year-old Joseph Richer, who was convicted in October by a jury of second-degree murder in the 2010 killing of Carlos Alberto Gomez Castellanos. Evidence showed the handyman was accompanying a police officer during an attempt to evict Richer from the beachfront condo.

Testimony also showed that Richer had not been making payments on the condo, which was owned by his father. The father was the one seeking to evict Richer.

Richer himself was shot and wounded by police during the confrontation. Jurors did not buy his claim the shooting was self-defense.
