Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who recently quit his Fox News gig for a possible White House bid in 2016, hit at the parenting style of President Obama and his wife, saying he couldn’t understand why the couple cared about broccoli, but not Beyonce.

Mr. Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, made the remarks while discussing his new book, “God, Guns, Grits and Gravy,” with People magazine. Among his points: Has either the president or first lady ever really listened to the lyrics of “Drunk in Love,” or watched Beyonce perform it?

“[The Obamas] are excellent and exemplary parents in many ways,” he said, Time magazine reported. “That’s the whole point. I don’t understand how on one hand they can be such doting parents and so careful about the intake of everything — how much broccoli they eat and where they go to school and making sure they’re kind of sheltered and shielded from so many things — and yet they don’t see anything that might not be suitable for either a preteen or a teen in some of the lyrical content and choreography of Beyonce, who has sort of a regular key to the door of the White House.”

Beyonce and her husband, rapper Jay Z, and their daughter, Blue Ivy, attended first lady Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday bash a year ago at the White House, and Mrs. Obama has taken her daughters to several Beyonce concerts.

Mr. Huckabee criticized the singer in his book for “obnoxious and toxic mental poison in the form of song lyrics,” Time reported. And her dance moves, he wrote, are “best left for the privacy of her bedroom.”
