NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A veteran New Orleans police officer has been placed on emergency suspension after his arrest for his role in a domestic incident.

Authorities say Officer James Cunningham was involved in an altercation about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday with a 35-year-old woman. The woman told police, that during the fight, Cunningham kicked down the door of her home and injured her hand.

The department’s Public Integrity Bureau arrested Cunningham on a charge of simple battery and home invasion. Bond information was not immediately available. It was unknown if he has an attorney.

Police say Cunningham was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Cunningham is an eight-year veteran of the department and was most recently assigned to its Investigation and Support Bureau.
