SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Gov. John Kitzhaber says he has been diagnosed with a minor form of skin cancer on his face.

The governor told the Oregonian Tuesday (https://bit.ly/1u4EWFu ) that he will undergo outpatient surgery in six to eight weeks to remove the pea-sized lesion from his left cheek. Kitzhaber says the cancer was identified as basal cell carcinoma, a slow-growing form of the disease.

Kitzhaber had a circular bandage on his cheek when he spoke to a business summit in Portland last week. A spokeswoman said he’d had a biopsy.

Kitzhaber, a former emergency room physician, says he’s “healthy as a horse.”
