COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - An annual program to raise money to support efforts to fight cancer is getting under way in the South Carolina capital.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Greater Columbia is kicking off its annual event on Tuesday. People interested in learning more are invited to come get some information.

Organizers say the kickoff program honors cancer survivors and caregivers. Attendees will also have a chance to register a team for the Relay for Life event planned for May 16.

During Relay For Life, teams and individuals camp out at a school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Last year, 4 million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide. More than 200 people participated in Columbia’s event, raising over $57,000.
