MANSFIELD, La. (AP) - A second audit of the DeSoto district attorney’s office reveals more details of an internal theft blamed on a former employee who faces criminal prosecution.

The Times reports (https://bit.ly/1Aba48h ) the results of a state Legislative Auditor’s investigative audit released Monday indicates Melanie Barber cashed 580 money orders totaling more than $136,000 payable to, or intended for, the DA’s office. Auditor Daryl Purpera says she is alleged to have used the money for her own personal use during the past decade.

The 32-year-old Barber was arrested in February and booked with monetary instrument abuse, malfeasance and filing or maintaining false public records. She has pleaded not guilty. A status conference is set Feb. 12 in DeSoto District Court.
