SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Jerry Brown has set special elections for May 19 to fill three state Senate seats vacated by lawmakers who were elected to Congress.

Brown also announced Tuesday that the primary elections for the 7th, 21st and 37th Senate districts will be held on March 17.

The elections are needed to replace Democratic Sen. Mark DeSaulnier of Concord; Republican Sen. Steve Knight of Palmdale; and Sen. Mimi Walters, a Republican from Irvine. All three represented safe districts for their parties.

The trio was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November but they did not formally resign until earlier this month.
