MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Scott Walker is calling for merging four state agencies into two, saying Wisconsin can be a leader in making government more efficient and accountable to the public.

Walker proposed in his State of the State speech Tuesday that the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation be merged with the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority.

He is also calling for merging the Department of Financial Institutions with the Department of Safety and Professional Services.

Walker says he believes that government has grown too big and is too intrusive in people’s lives, but it still has to work to do.

He did not provide any estimated savings, or impact on state workers, in his speech.
